The Pick-Wheel Route

The Seahawks were down big in the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship Game against the Packers, and their offense hadn’t done much all day. This 26-yard completion got them going.

As shown below, Marshawn Lynch ran a wheel route from out of the backfield. Tight End Luke Willson ran inside with one mission, to create a pick on linebacker Sam Barrington, who was covering Marshawn Lynch.

Willson brought his man inside and succeeded in picking Lynch’s man. Barrington made the mistake of going under Willson instead of over the top, which played right into the design of the play. Lynch was left wide open for an easy big play. This completion set the stage for Seattle’s comeback.
